Urban Music Farm: The NW's Recreational Musician Community
Our Story
Urban Music Farm (UMF) began as a simple idea amongst friends who shared a common desire to learn, play and perform music in a fun and recreational environment with social connection, personal growth, and community building representing the core focus. Following a handful of live events where rotating singers (most, first timers to the stage) rehearsed, then performed cover songs with a UMF backing band; the idea has evolved to include a wider range of musical explorations by local, recreational musicians and vocalists of all levels and interests.
Today the UMF mission is to foster and build community between adult recreational musicians who are passionate about making music without the constraints, pressures, or judgment of the professional music scene. We shift the playing experience from the living room to the band room and believe the best music is the music we can make together.

Who We Are
UMF operates as an organization for avid recreational musicians and vocalists who want to explore, play and perform various musical genres including rock, blues, funk, pop, country, and reggae with new styles being added as the community and its interests grow. Our programs provide short-term playing commitments and long-term community and a place for the practiced musician to apply their existing skill set with other like-minded players.
We do not seek to compete with traditional music schools or lesson providers. There will always be those who wish to aspire to musical competency through individual or group instruction and there are plenty of resources out there that provide these opportunities. UMF's approach to recreational music making is focused on the practiced musician and applying an existing skill set in band-oriented environments. At UMF you will band together and learn differently.

Tom Tafelsky is UMF Founder and Program Director. As a self-taught musician he believes strongly in the power and pursuit of the recreational musician. When he's not busy dreaming up cool new ways for UMF community members to make music together he can be found playing music or socializing with friends, family and community.
